"Freedom is being so in love with Christ that you do exactly what you want to do and it accords with Christ." -John Piper
As an American, I started reflecting on July 4th. I love the excitement of getting a day off work (for most of us), having a cookout with loved ones, and watching a firework show, but do you know the true reason we celebrate the Fourth of July? The true reason we are so proud to be Americans? Freedom.
Independence Day is a holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 241 years ago. My husband and I were just discussing earlier today how lucky and blessed we are to live in such a free country. And then I got to thinking about the freedom we have in Jesus Christ.
Just like we celebrate the Fourth of July and our freedom as Americans, we should also celebrate the freedom that Jesus gave us through his sacrifice. Jesus paid the price for us, because he loves us so much, freeing us from death. Think about that. How liberating! By choosing to have a relationship with Jesus we can forever be free. There's no greater gift in life than to know our Savior so personally.
I love the excerpt from Brian Houstan, founder and Global Senior Pastor of Hillsong Church, found in his book Live Love Lead:
"It is my firm belief that following Jesus is the only journey in life worth taking. After seeing the way God changes hearts, meets impossible needs, heals incurable diseases, and restores people, I am convinced beyond a doubt that God didn't create us to live mediocre, settle-for-less lives. He sent his Son to die on the cross so that we could be forgiven and have eternal life, and not so we could sleepwalk through life as we wait for Heaven."
What is more freeing that knowing that we will have eternal life with our Savior?
